The climb typically takes two days and one night, and starts in the early morning with a journey to the base of the mountain. From there, climbers will embark on a steep ascent up the mountain, with various checkpoints along the way to ensure that everyone is acclimatizing properly.

The climb is not for the faint of heart, as the terrain is rocky and steep, and the altitude can cause symptoms of altitude sickness. However, the rewards are well worth the effort. The views from the summit are truly awe-inspiring, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape stretching out as far as the eye can see.

Along the way, climbers will also encounter a diverse range of flora and fauna, from tropical forests to alpine meadows. The mountain is home to a variety of unique species, including the Kinabalu Giant Red Leech, which can only be found on the mountain.

Itinerary

Day 1

  • Kota Kinabalu/Kinabalu Park HQ/Timpohon Gate/Ascend Mount Kinabalu/Laban Rata
  • 06:00 Pick-up from your hotel lobby and depart on a 2 hours journey to Kinabalu Park Headquarter. Collect your packed lunch
  • 09:00 The guide will arrange for all necessary registrations, assign you a mountain guide and apply for your ID TAG
  • Remember to wear your ID TAG at all times
  • You’ll then be transferred to the starting point – Timpohon Gate – where your journey and quest to the summit of Borneo’s highest mountain begins!
  • The climb will take approximately 4-5 hours
  • The trek will pass by different vegetation zones from Oak and Chestnut to mossy and eventually to alpine type of vegetation
  • Arrive and check into Laban Rata Rest House @ 3272m or similar in the late afternoon
  • Buffet dinner at Laban Rata Restaurant and overnight

Day 2

  • Low’s Peak/Descent Mount Kinabalu/Kota Kinabalu
  • 02:00 Wake up for early supper and depart for the continuation of journey towards the summit of Mount Kinabalu
  • 07:00 Descend back to Laban Rata for late breakfast and check out
  • Trek down to Timpohon Gate for transfer back to the Kinabalu Park Headquarters (ETA 13:00 to 15:00)
  • Congratulations, you can now collect your Certificate of Achievement!
  • Buffet lunch will be served at the Balsam Restaurant in Kinabalu Park
  • Transfer back to Kota Kinabalu City. Journey takes approximately 2 hours

  • Climbers below 16 years old are considered child and will be accompanied by a separate mountain guide

Additional Information

  • Lunch will be converted to packed lunch on Day 2 (Mount Kinabalu Descent) for climbers who arrived late and missed the local restaurant’s opening hours
  • Restaurant Business Hour 07:00–20:00
  • Your extra luggage can be stored at Kinabalu Park HQ at a nominal fee of MYR 12 per piece prior climb

Things to note

  • Climbers who reach Timpohon Gate after 16:30 will be imposed a fee of MYR 15 per hour per guide and need to pay directly to the mountain on the spot
  • Tipping is like giving a hug. Although it’s never expected, it’s always very much appreciated
  • Do take note that your passport will be required for verification during registration at the Kinabalu Park office. Please bring it along with you
  • Laban Rata Resthouse does not provide boiled water for drinking/refill to climbers. Coffee and tea will only be provided complimentary during breakfast and supper. However, mineral water, coffee, tea, and other hot drinks and soft drinks are still available for purchase at the Grocery Counter (Laban Rata Resthouse)
  • Check-out time for Laban Rata Resthouse is 10:00. Should you check out later than 10:30, a late check-out fee of MYR 100/hour applies, to be paid directly on the spot
  • Effective as of 1st September 2017, the Tourism and Culture Ministry of Malaysia will be implementing a Malaysian Tourism Tax (TTX). Foreign tourists will be required to pay a flat rate of MYR 10 per person per night regardless of accommodation star level, The TTx is to be paid upon check-in. Malaysian or permanent residents residing in Malaysia are exempted from TTX and are required to present a valid identification upon check-in for the exemption

Transportation arrangement

  • The friendly guide will greet and meet you at the airport arrival hall or your hotel lobby with a placard bearing your good name. Should you encounter difficulties in locating the guide, you could call the local ground handler who will assist you
  • Do not recommend you catch your flight on the same day that you descend the mountain due to possible delay from injuries, tiredness, and/or bad weather and traffic conditions
  • For 2 days 1-night packages, the transport will pick you up from your hotel between 06:00. The team will advise your pick-up time 1 day before your departure. Kindly request your hotel for an early or packed breakfast on the day of your tour
  • A total of MYR 30 nett per person per way for transport will be added to/from locations outside Kota Kinabalu city (e.g. Beringgis Beach Resort/Langkah Syabas Beach Resort/Papar/Kinarut Area)
  • All transportations is based on Seat-In-Coach. This is a transfer service in which clients share their vehicles with other clients. This is a door-to-door service with multiple pickups & drop-offs throughout the journey. Do expect some short waiting time
  • The group rates are quoted without deviation, which means the operator provide only one return transfer for your group. If your group requires more than one return transfer, additional transfer charges may apply

Friendly notes from Sabah Park

  • It is recommended that all climbers should have themselves medically checked before attempting any mountain climb. If you have a history of suffering from the following ailments, it is highly recommended that you should refrain from climbing: Hypertension, Diabetes, Palpitation, Arthritis, Heart disease, severe anemia, Peptic ulcers, Epileptic Fits, Obesity (overweight), Chronic asthma, Muscular cramps, Hepatitis (jaundice); or any other disease which may hamper the climber
  • Children below 15 years old must fill in the indemnity form upon registration at Park Headquarters

Responsible guidelines

  • SEAMAUI BORNEO shall not be liable where the contract is affected by ‘force majeure’. In the context of these terms and conditions, ‘force majeure’ is any event that is beyond the reasonable control of the Company or which is unavoidable by the exercise of due diligence on the Company’s part including but not limited to war, the threat of war, riot, civil commotion or strife, hostilities, industrial dispute, natural disaster, fire, acts of God, terrorist activity, nuclear disaster, adverse weather, government action or technical problems with transportation
  • Request private charter 6-10 seater vehicle, additional MYR 300/vehicle. Kindly inform the operator before the tour commences
  • Patients of the following diseases are not recommended to participate in the adventure tour: hypertension, heart disease, asthma, epilepsy
  • Pregnant women are also not recommended as the boat ride may be bumpy depending on the sea condition. If you are having similar issues as above, kindly consult your physician before you enroll in this activity
  • Please do not bring valuables
  • Subject to the SOP announced by the government. Must use My Sejahtera to scan and display (Low Risk No Symptom & Fully Vaccinated)
  • All visitors must be fully vaccinated with 2 dos before they are allowed to participate
  • Adolescents aged 12-18 can also receive at least one dose of the vaccine
  • All visitors must wear a mask and show the operator the Covid test kit result before the tour starts
  • You will be responsible for obtaining your own visas to enter Sabah
  • You are strongly recommended to have your own personal travel insurance while traveling, to ensure a peace of mind
  • Departure time is approximate and varies from different hotels so please do reconfirm with the operator’s staff
